Arc is a free web browser developed by The Browser Company for use on macOS, iOS, and Microsoft Windows. Arc is based on Chromium and written in Swift. It supports Chrome browser extensions and uses Google’s search engine by default. However, the Browser Company claims that Arc is more than just a browser, but a complete open platform for the web, calling it an ” Internet
Operating System.” Arc is intended to act as an operating system for the web, integrating web browsing with built-in apps and features. Arc includes a scrapbook that allows users to redesign websites in a similar way to browser extensions! In other words, the browser is designed to be customizable, allowing users to change the way certain websites look aesthetically. Allows the user to choose the color they want it to appear in (a solid color or a color gradient) during installation.
Unlike many other browsers, Arc uses vertical tabs (found in the sidebar). The sidebar contains all of the browser’s functionality in addition to the browsing window.
Arc uses a sidebar to store all of the browser’s parts—including the search bar, tab list, and bookmarks—except for the viewing window. The sidebar also includes controls for playing audio. This feature also works with video calling software
, such as Google Meet. The search bar in Arc is similar in function and design to Apple’s Spotlight feature, which can be used to search for websites and URLs . Tabs can be pinned, copied, and the browser’s history can be accessed. Arc includes an optional built-in ad blocker , and the browser company claims that it does not share user search data.

- Spaces:
Tabs in Arc can be organized into “Spaces,” and different themes and browser profiles can be applied to them. Tabs in Spaces can be displayed in a split view—with up to four tabs—per window. They can be pinned, which places them in a labeled area in the sidebar. Unpinned tabs disappear after a while (although this can be changed or disabled in the settings), but they can be played with in the “Archived Tabs” section . Tabs can also be renamed. - Easel feature:
Arc includes several built-in apps, including an “Easel” feature that can be used to collect web page images and URLs. Easel features tools for typing and drawing that can even be shared with other people. Aside from the built-in apps, Arc also integrates with other web apps like Gmail and Google Calendar. - Boosts:
Arc allows users to customize the way websites are viewed using the “Boosts” feature. Boosts work similar to browser extensions, but allow the user to fully customize their experience using CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. In this feature, Arc allows the user to customize web pages in a simple interface, allowing the user to change the website’s color, change fonts , and remove sections using the “zap” control. - Air Traffic Control:
This Arc feature allows users to choose which space a particular link will open in. Users can create something called an “Rroute” that specifies which space it will open in when a link is opened from an external source. The “Air Traffic Control” feature can be accessed and changed from Arc Settings > Links > Air Traffic Control.
